Instructions for conversion from
tandem manufacturer rating
to the USPA tandem instructor rating

Each non-USPA Tandem Instructor who seeks a USPA Tandem Instructor rating must:

1. Be a current member of USPA
2. Show proof of a manufacturers rating and proof of current tandem jumping
activity necessary to be considered current by the United States Parachute Association (outlined in the IRM and listed below).

The box below is intended as a guideline to help each applicant identify what is necessary to receive the USPA Tandem Instructor rating.

Look at the left column to find your current rating status, then move to the right column to see what requirements need to be met in order to complete the USPA Tandem Instructor rating requirements.

The indicated items on USPA Tandem Instructor proficiency card must be signed by either a USPA Tandem Instructor or a USPA Tandem Course Director, as indicated on each of the line items below the table, and then submitted to the USPA for processing.

USPA Tandem Instructor Rating
USPA Coach rating (current or noncurrent), current tandem manufacturer rating with at least 15 tandem jumps in the past 12 months, at least one in the previous 90 days, attended a USPA Instructor seminar with the previous 12 months. Tandem proficiency card requirements: 2,3,4,5,6,7,10, and 16, proof of manufacturer rating, current FAA Class 3 or higher medical certificate or the equivalent verified and signed by a USPA tandem examiner. Fax or mail the proficiency card to the USPA with the $40 rating fee enclosed.
   
Other USPA instructor rating (current or noncurrent), current tandem manufacturer rating with at least 15 tandem jumps in the past 12 months, at least one in the previous 90 days, attended a USPA instructor seminar within the previous 12 months. Proof of manufacturer's rating, tandem proficiency card requirement 10, current FAA Class 3 or higher medi al certificate or the equivalent verififed and signed by a USPA tandem examiner. Fax or mail the proficiency card to the USPA with the $40 rating fee enclosed.
No USPA ratings with or without the Basic Instructor Course, current tandem manufacturer rating with at least 15 tandem jumps in the past 12 months, at least one tandem jump in the previous 90 days, attended a USPA instructor seminar within the previous 12 months. Attend a USPA Coach Rating Course or test out for the Coach rating, tandem proficiency card requirements 2,3,4,5,6,7,10 and 126, proof of manufacturer's rating, current FAA Class 3 or higher medical certificate or the equivalent verified and signed by a USPA tandem examiner. Fax or mail the proficiency card to the USPA with the $40 rating fee enclosed.

2. Assisted in two Category B tandem ground preps
3.* Assisted in two Category D ground preps
4.* Observed ground preps n Categories B,C,E,F
5.* Correctly taught freefall stability and the basic freefall maneuvers, including freefall turns, backloos, barrel rolls, front loops, and tracking.
6.* Prepared an effective canopy flight plan and provided ground-to-air (e.g., radio) instruction for winds up to 14 mph.
7.* Participated in the spoting and aircraft lessons from Categories D through H (or equivalent training).
10. Correctly answered at least 80 percent of the questions on the USPA tandem instructor final examination.
16.* Completed on satisfactory Category D freefall and canopy training session and air evaluation during a tandem instructor rating course.
  * Current USPA instructors (in another discipline) need not meet the starred requirements.
